Sanctuary, Edna
30 June 1871 – 20 February 1958
Edna Sanctuary was the second of six children to Jacob Sanctuary & Margaret Ann Brook. They married 18 May 1867 in Bradford. (Jacob’s family was one of several families that moved from Norfolk to the Saltaire/Shipley area in the 1850’s).
Edna was born
30 June 1871
in Saltaire. In 1881 they were living at 13 Titus Street in Saltaire with Jacob working as a warp twister. By 1891 they had moved to 75 George Street in Saltaire with Edna working as a cloth burler.
Edna married Alfred Leather in 1896 in Bradford. In 1901 they were living, with no children, at 813 Barkerend Road in Bradford. Alfred was a foreign correspondent. By 1911 they had moved to Sunny Bank, Farsley, nr Leeds. Alfred was a secretary of a public company.
They had three children: Alfred Norman born 1902, Marjorie born 1905, and Bernard born 1916.
Alfred died 1929 and Edna died 20 February 1958. They were living at 60 Marlborough Road in Shipley. Edna left £5,189 0s 6d to her son Alfred Norman (public analyst/chemist) and her daughter Marjorie (spinster).

Shackleton, Beatrice
1877 - ????
Beatrice Shackleton was born 1877 in Saltaire, the elder of two daughters to John Shackleton & Rachel Hull. They were married 31 July 1875 at Bradford Cathedral. John was a spinner overlooker living at 27 George Street in Saltaire; Rachel a worsted weaver living at 5 Jane Street.
In 1891 they were living at 27 Caroline Street in Saltaire. In 1891 they were living at 27 George Street in Saltaire with Beatrice working as a twister. The whole family immigrated to the USA in 1891. With John already in the USA, Rachel and her two daughters arrived in New York (from Liverpool) 23 October 1891 aboard the SS Britannic of the White Star Line.
In 1892 they were living at Jamestown in Chautauqua County in New York State. Beatrice was the sister of Gertrude Shackleton and niece of Sarah Hannah Shackleton.

Shackleton, Gertrude
1880 -????
Gertrude Shackleton was born 1880 in Saltaire, the younger of two daughters to John Shackleton & Rachel Hull. They were married 31 July 1875 at Bradford Cathedral. John was a spinner overlooker living at 27 George Street in Saltaire; Rachel a worsted weaver living at 5 Jane Street. In 1881 they were living at 27 Caroline Street in Saltaire.

Shackleton, Sarah Hanna
1861 -????
Sarah Hannah Shackleton was born 1861 in Saltaire, the youngest of seven children to Moses Shackleton & Sarah Redman. They were married 25 March 1841 at St Thomas Heponstall nr Hebden Bridge. In 1861 they were living at 14 Shirley Street in Saltaire with Moses working as a warehouseman. Moses died in 1862.
In 1871 & 1881 widowed Sarah lived with her children at 27 George Street in Saltaire. In 1881 Sarah Hannah was working as a spinner. In 1891 & 1901 Sarah Hannah worked as a weaver and lived with her mother, Sarah, at 4 Herbert Street in Saltaire. Sarah died in 1902.
Sarah Hannah married Timothy Taylor 9 October 1909 at Bradford Cathedral. In 1911 they were living, without children, at 4 Herbert Street. Timothy was an unemployed labourer and Sarah was a weaver. By 1918 they had moved to Baildon.
Sarah Hannah was the aunt of Gertrude Shackleton and Beatrice Shackleton.

Shuttleworth, Anne
1873 -????
Anne Shuttleworth was born 1873 in Saltaire, the fifth of seven children to George Shuttleworth & Ann Rawling. They were married 1860 in Halifax. In 1871 they were living at 23 Herbert Street in Saltaire with George working as a weaver. In 1881 they were living at 19 Shirley Street in Saltaire with George working as a spinning overlooker.
From 1891 the family lived at 31 Albert Road (renumbered now 61) in Saltaire. George was a plush weaver before he died in 1899. Anne worked as silk spinner, a bowler in the mill and as a burler & mender.
As a spinster she lived at 31 Albert Road until moving to 14 Tower Road in Shipley sometime after 1930. She was still living there in 1951.
Anne was the sister of Sabina Shuttleworth & Polly Shuttleworth.

Shuttleworth, Emma
c1876 – 26 February 1963
Emma Shuttleworth, the eldest of four children, was born c1876 in Saltaire, to Seth Shuttleworth & Margaret Watson. They were married in 1875. In 1881 the family lived at 8 Amelia Street in Saltaire with Seth working as a house painter. From 1891 they lived at 2 Fern Place in Saltaire with Emma working as a silk spreader then as wool drawer.
Emma married John Holdsworth Jeffrey in 1909. In 1911 they were living, without children, with John’s widowed mother in Bingley.
Emma died 26 February 1963 in Bingley.

Shuttleworth, Polly
21 September 1877 – 17 January 1951
Polly Shuttleworth was born 21 September 1877 in Saltaire, the youngest of seven children to George Shuttleworth & Ann Rawling. They were married 1860 in Halifax. In 1871 they were living at 23 Herbert Street in Saltaire with George working as a weaver. In 1881 they were living at 19 Shirley Street in Saltaire with George working as a spinning overlooker.
From 1891 the family lived at 31 Albert Road (renumbered now 61) in Saltaire. George was a plush weaver before he died in 1899. In 1891 Polly worked as a spinner. Living with her widowed mother at 31 Albert Road in 1901 & 1911 she was working as a weaver.
Polly enrolled as a member of Saltaire Congregational church 31 July 1901.
Working as a weaver and living at 4 Duckworth Lane, Bradford, Polly emigrated to America in 1922. She departed Liverpool aboard the S.S. Laconia 20 July, arriving in New York 30 July.
Polly (known in America as Pauline) lived in Hartford, Connecticut. She died, a spinster, 17 January 1951.
Polly was the sister of Sabina Shuttleworth & Anne Shuttleworth.

Shuttleworth, Sabina
1875 - 1941
Sabina Shuttleworth was born 1875 in Saltaire, the sixth of seven children to George Shuttleworth & Ann Rawling. They were married 1860 in Halifax. In 1871 they were living at 23 Herbert Street in Saltaire with George working as a weaver. In 1881 they were living at 19 Shirley Street in Saltaire with George working as a spinning overlooker.
From 1891 the family lived at 31 Albert Road (renumbered now 61) in Saltaire. George was a plush weaver before he died in 1899. Sabrina was a winder before becoming a confectioner’s baker.
Sabina married William Stanley Walker 13 June 1900. In 1901 they were living at 12 Belmont Terrace in Shipley with William working as a tea merchant. William died in 1903 aged just 27. He was buried 11 August 1903 at St Johns Baildon.
In 1911widowed Sabina was working as a confectioner’s baker and living with her widowed mother at 31 Albert Road.
Sabrina died in 1941 at Lower Agrigg, Wakefield. Sabina was the sister of Anne Shuttleworth & Polly Shuttleworth.

Smith, Susannah
1876 – 14 December 1955
Susannah Smith was born 1876 in Saltaire, the youngest of four children to Edward Smith and his wife Mary. In 1871 & 1881 they were living at 8 Mawson Street in Saltaire with Edward working as a spinning overlooker. In 1891 & 1901 they were living at 5 Harold Place in Saltaire with Susannah working as a reeler.
Susannah married John Hudson, a foreman iron turner for a loom maker in 1904. They lived all their married lives at 23 Leyburn Terrace in Shipley. Susannah died 14 December 1955 at St Luke’s Hospital in Bradford.

Squelch, Margaret Ellen
c1876 -????
Margaret Ellen Squelch was the third of four children to William Squelch & Mary Hannah Redman. They were married in the Bradford area in 1869.
Margaret was born c1876 in Saltaire. In 1881 & 1891 the family were living at 11 Herbert Street in Saltaire. William was a wool combing overlooker. In 1891 Margaret, aged 15, was working as a spinner. By 1901 the family had moved to 38 Vance Road, Blackpool William was a company house keeper and Margaret was not working.
In 1909 Margaret married Charles Walker in the Fylde district of Lancashire. By 1911 they were living, without children, at 1 Berkley Crescent in Harehills, Leeds. Charles was a grocer with Margaret assisting him.

Sugden, Sarah
17 May 1870 - 7 August 1952
Sarah Sugden born 17 May 1870 in Saltaire, was the youngest of four children to Samuel Sugden and Priscilla Wood. They were married 20 December 1856 at Bradford Cathedral. From before 1871 to after 1891 the family lived at 11 Amelia Street in Saltaire In 1881 Sarah, aged just eleven, worked as a worsted spinner, in 1891 she was a worsted weaver.
In 1892 Sarah married William Goodall from Baildon. In 1901 they were living at Hawkesworth with children; Lillian (b1893), Edward (b1895), Doris (b1898) and Hilton (b7 May 1900). William was a green keeper at a golf club. By 1911 they had moved to 50 Edinburgh Street in Bradford. They had three more children; Eleanor (b1902), Edith Emily (b1907) and Mabel (b1909). William was a gardener.
By 1939 Sarah & William were living at 42 Northgate, Baildon, where they remained the rest of their lives. William died in 1945.
Widow Sarah died, 7 August 1952. In her will she left £838 8s 1d to her son, Hilton, and her married daughter, Edith Emily Riley.

Summerscales, Annie
1880 – 1956
Annie Summerscales was born 1880 in Saltaire. Her parents were Joseph Rushworth Summerscales & Louisa Edison who were married in 1880.
In 1891 Annie was working as a spinner and living with her uncle, David Middleton, at 8 Edward Street (now renumbered 13) in Saltaire.
Annie married James Cordingley, a warehouseman, 22 April 1905 at St John’s Baildon. In 1911 they were living at 12 Stone Fold in Baildon, with James working as a gate keeper. They had three sons; Arthur (b1905), Herbert & Harold (both b1911).
James died in 1946 and Annie died in 1956.
