Feather, Polly
1868 – 1954

Polly Feather was born 1868 in Saltaire. She was the fifth of seven children to James Feather & Sarah Ann Shackleton. They were married 26 February 1859 in Keighley.

In 1861 they were living with Sarah’s parents at 5 Mary Street in Saltaire, with James working as a roller coverer. In 1871 they had their own home at 42 Mary Street. By 1881 they were living at 22 Gordon Terrace (renumbered 93 Bingley Road) in Saltaire with Polly working as a mill hand. In 1891 they were at 10 Victoria Road in Saltaire with Polly working as a burler & piece picker.

Polly married Joseph Dunn in 1898. In 1901 they were living in Aston, Birmingham with Joseph working as an iron moulder. By 1911 they were living at Handsworth in Staffordshire with sons Leslie Joseph (born 1902) and Arthur James (born 1904). By 1914 they were living in Keighley.

Polly died in 1954.

 

Fell, Jane
c1868 – September 1891

Jane Fell was the eighth of nine children to David Fell and Hannah Cawthra. They were married 25 December 1851 at St. Pauls Shipley.

Jane was born c1868 in Saltaire. In 1871 the family was living at 3 Lower School Street in Saltaire. David, a woolsorter, died in 1878, aged 47.  He was buried at St Paul’s Shipley 16 October 1878. Jane, working as a spinner was living with her widowed mother at 48 Victoria Road in Saltaire in both the 1881 and 1891 censuses.

Sadly Jane died in September 1891. She was buried at St Paul’s Shipley 19 September 1891.

 

Ferguson, Annie
1874 – 1946

Annie Ferguson was born 1874 in Saltaire, the second youngest of seven children, to Charles Ferguson & Mary Burnip. They were married in 1856 at Stockton in County Durham. From before 1871 they lived at 8 Jane Street in Saltaire with Charles working as a cordwainer. In 1891 Annie worked as a warp picker.

Annie married Alfred Longfellow 15 April 1897 at St Pauls Shipley. They had two children; Alice born 1898 and Arthur born 1902. In 1901 they were in Baildon. From 1911 they lived in Shipley with Alfred working as a weaving shed manager.

Annie died in 1946 in Knaresborough.

Ferguson, Emmeline
c1872 – 1959

Emmeline Ferguson born c1872 in Saltaire was the second eldest of seven children to William Ferguson & Maria Greenwell. They were in Hartlepool, County Durham in 1866. From before 1881 to after 1911 the family lived at 4 Myrtle Place in Saltaire with William working as a blacksmith; Emmeline was a weaver.

Emmeline married Alfred Holden 2 October 1912 at St Pauls Shipley. Alfred was a plumber living at 19 Albert Road (renumbered 37) in Saltaire.

Emmeline died in 1959, aged 87. 

 

Fieldhouse, Annie Elizabeth
c1873 – 1943

Annie Elizabeth Fieldhouse was the eldest of four children to James Fieldhouse and Mary Ann Shepherd. They were married at Bradford Cathedral 10 April 1871.

Annie was born c1873 in Saltaire. In 1881 the family was living at 22 Constance Street in Saltaire. James was a combing overlooker. In 1891 they were at the same address, Annie was working as a twister. By 1901 the family had moved to 24 Constance Street in Saltaire, James was now a cashmere card cleaner. Annie was not working.In 1911 they were at the same address with James a wool sorter and Annie was a house worker.

Annie died a spinster in December 1943 aged 70 in the Keighley District.

 

Firth, Sarah Jane
1878 – 1921

Sarah Jane Firth was born 1878 in Saltaire, the elder of two daughters to George Firth & Mary Ann Pattison. They were married in Bradford district in 1874. They lived at 34 George Street in Saltaire with George working as a wool sorter. Sarah worked as spinner in 1891 and as a weaver in 1901.

Sarah married Harry Batt in 1904. In 1911 they were living, without children, at 1 Jane Street in Saltaire with Harry working as a bootmaker.

Sarah died in 1921 whilst living in Jane Street.

 

Foulds, Ada
c1879 - 1943

Ada Foulds was the youngest of five children to William & Eliza Foulds.
Ada was born c1879 in Saltaire. In 1881 the family was living at 18 Albert Road in Saltaire. William was a naturalist (a Naturalist was a recognised occupation: he collected, mounted, bought and sold live or mounted specimens of birds, insects, fish, animals, trees, flowers etc. He also often studied their lives and habitats).

By 1891 they had moved to 45&46 Titus Street in Saltaire. William was a grocer & naturalist. Ada, aged just 12, was working as a spinner. By 1901 Ada was a worsted weaver, living with her sister, Clara, and her husband Henry Sayner at 45 Titus Street in Saltaire.

Ada married James Cawthra 1November 1902 at Bradford Cathedral. In 1911 they were living at 31Whitlam Street in Saltaire. James worked as a wool sorter. They had two children; William born c1904 and Nellie born c1905.

Ada died 1943 in Bradford aged 64.

 

Fox, Emily
1872 -????

Emily Fox was born in Saltaire 1872 the second youngest of four children to Thomas Bradford Fox (14th May 1828 - 1894) & Ellen Hird (1843 – 1923). They were married 1861.

In 1881 the family were living at 8 Gordon Terrace (renumbered 65 Bingley Road) in Saltaire with Thomas working as a wool sorter. By 1891 they were at 13 Albert Road (renumbered 25) in Saltaire with Emily working as a weaver.

Emily married Walter Marshall 21 July 1896 at St Pauls Shipley. In 1901 & 1911 they lived at 31 Dover Street in Shipley. Walter was a solicitor’s clerk; they had no children.

Emily was the sister of Kate Fox & Helena Fox.

 

Fox, Helena
19 February 1870 – 14 May 1945

Helena Fox was born in Saltaire 19 February 1870 the second eldest of four children to Thomas Bradford Fox (14th May 1828 - 1894) & Ellen Hird (1843 – 1923). They were married 1861.

In 1881 the family were living at 8 Gordon Terrace (renumbered 65 Bingley Road) in Saltaire with Thomas working as a wool sorter. By 1891 they were at 13 Albert Road (renumbered 25 Albert Road) in Saltaire with Helena working as a wool rover.

Helena married Harry Wright sometime before 1897.  In 1901 & 1911 they were living at 25 Johnson Street in Bingley with Harry working as a spindle turner. They had five children; Thomas (7 November 1897 – 1940), Vincent (22 June 1901 – 8 May 1974), Eva May (1 September 1903 - ), Emily (1905 - ) and Harry (1909 - ).

Helena died in Bingley 14 May 1945 aged 75. Helena was the sister of Emily Fox & Kate Fox. Helena was also known as Lena or Eleanor.

 

Fox, Kate
1874 – 12 February 1949

Kate was born 1874 in Saltaire the youngest of four children to Thomas Bradford Fox (14th May 1828 - 1894) & Ellen Hird (1843 – 1923). They were married 1861. In 1881 the family were living at 8 Gordon Terrace (renumbered 65 Bingley Road) in Saltaire with Thomas working as a wool sorter. By 1891 they were living at 13 Albert Road (renumbered 25) in Saltaire with Kate working as a twister.

Kate married Ernest Redman 21July 1896 at St. Pauls Shipley. In 1901 they were living without children at 1 Crowgill Place in Shipley; Ernest was a mechanic. Ernest emigrated to the USA, arriving in New York aboard S.S. Ivernia 13 January 1903. Kate soon followed her husband, arriving in New York aboard S.S. Oceanic 30 April 1903.

In 1920 they were living in Hamilton, New Jersey and in 1930 they were living in Trenton, New Jersey. Ernest was a machinist. They had three children; Herbert born c1905, Hilda born c1912 and Mabel born c1914.
Kate died 12 February 1949 aged 74 and she was buried in Trenton, New Jersey.

Kate was the sister of Emily Fox & Helena Fox.

 

Furnish, Harriet
1873 – 17 January 1943

Harriet Furnish was born 1873 in Saltaire, the youngest of four children to Martin Furnish & Ellen Mitchell. They were married 1 June 1862 at Bradford Cathedral. They lived at 33 Caroline Street in Saltaire with Martin working as a coal merchant. In 1891 & 1901 Harriet was working as a weaver.

Harriet married David Briggs, a waggoner, 13 May 1901 at St Pauls Shipley. They had a son, Harry, born 1905. They lived all their married life at 3 Norman Street in Windhill.

Harriet died 17 January 1943 at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
