Wallbank, Fanny
c1877 -????

Fanny Wallbank was the middle of three children born c1877 in Saltaire to Jesse & Elizabeth Wallbank. In 1881 the family were living at 9 Amelia Street in Saltaire, with Jesse working as a wool sorter. In 1891 Fanny, aged fourteen was a spinner, living with her grandmother, Fanny Sorrell, at 35 Caroline Street in Saltaire. In 1901 she was a worsted drawer, still living at 35 Caroline Street but with her widowed mother.

Fanny married Spenceley Russell a widower eighteen years her elder at Bradford Cathedral 27 July 1901. In 1911 they were living at 10 Dale Street in Shipley. William was a machine wool comber. They had four children; William (b1903), Jesse (b1905), Alice (b1908) and Ethel (b1910).

 

Wheelhouse, Annie
c1872 -????

Annie Wheelhouse was born in Saltaire c1872. She was the youngest of four children to William Wheelhouse & Ann Milner. They were married 9 April 1860 at Bradford Cathedral.

In 1881 & 1891 the family were living at 8 Titus Street in Saltaire. William was a wool sorter and in 1891 Annie was a warp picker.

Annie married Charles William Senior 15 December 1896 at St Paul’s, Shipley. In 1901 & 1911 they were living at 9 Ferrand Road in Shipley. Charles was a house painter. They had two daughters; Mabel born c1898 and Winifred born c1905.

 

Whitaker, Alice
c1873 -????

Alice Whitaker was born in Saltaire c1873, the younger of two daughters to William & Maria Whitaker. In 1871 they were living at 25 Herbert Street in Saltaire with William’s widowed mother, Hannah. William was a carpenter & joiner. By 1881 they had moved to 5 Fanny Street in Saltaire. In 1891 they were living at 17 Albert Road (renumbered 33) in Saltaire with Alice working as a weaver.

In 1901 & 1911 Alice was living with her widowed mother at 17 Albert Road. She continued to work as a weaver.

Alice was the sister of Sarah Hannah Whitaker.

 

Whitaker, Sarah Hannah
c1871 – 13 December 1943

Sarah Hannah Whitaker was born in Saltaire c1871, the elder of two daughters to William & Maria Whitaker. In 1871 they were living at 25 Herbert Street in Saltaire with William’s widowed mother, Hannah. William was a carpenter & joiner. By 1881 they had moved to 5 Fanny Street in Saltaire. In 1891 they were living at 17 Albert Road (renumbered 33) in Saltaire with Sarah working as a cloth burler.

Sarah married William Henry Feather, a grocer from Keighley, 21 April 1897 at St Pauls Shipley. They never had any children; in 1901 they lived in Horton and by 1911 they were at 16 Grantham Road in Bradford.

William died 8 March 1916 and left £6267 9s 5d (worth £486k in 2015) in his will. Sarah was living at 6 Dirkhill Road in Bradford, where she remained until she died 13 December 1943. Sarah left £11,770 4s 8d (worth £480k in 2015) in her will.

Sarah was the sister of Alice Whitaker.

 

Whitfield, Mary Ann
27 November 1962 – 1935

Whitfield was Mary Ann’s married name. Mary Ann Walker was born in Saltaire 27 November 1862, the second of three daughters to William & Faith Walker. In 1871 the family were living at 28 Mary Street in Saltaire with William working as a weaver. Mary’s mother, Faith, died in 1880 aged 49. She was buried 13 October 1880 at St Pauls Shipley.

In 1881 Mary was a worsted winder, living with her widowed father at 28 Mary Street in Saltaire. Mary married George William Whitfield 6 March 1886 at Bradford Cathedral. By 1891 they were living without children at 25 Herbert Street in Saltaire. George was a plush dyer and Mary a worsted weaver. By 1901 they were living at 6 Whitlam Street in Saltaire. George was a greaser in a factory.

They had two children; Laura (born c1898) and Norman (born 27th Oct 1899 – died 1969). George died in 1905. In 1911 widowed Mary was living with her two children at 6 Whitlam Street in Saltaire.

Mary died in 1935.

 

Wilson, Christiana
c1877 -????

Christiana Wilson was the youngest of six children (all girls) to Matthew Wilson & Christiana Wray. They were married 22 July 1855 St Peter’s Leeds.

Christiana was born in Saltaire c1877. In 1881 the family were living at 20 Jane St in Saltaire. Matthew, a stone mason, died before 1891.

In 1891 Christiana was working as a spinner and living with her widowed mother at 17 Jane Street in Saltaire. In 1901 they lived at 15 Dove Street, Saltaire. Christiana was now a worsted rover.

In 1911 Christiana was working at home with her widowed mother at 15 Jane Street. Her mother died in 1914, aged 80, and was buried at St Paul’s Shipley 7 October 1914.
