Mary Elizabeth Read was born 1877 in Saltaire, the youngest of four children to David Read & Phoebe Exley. They were married 1866 in Leeds. In 1871 they were living in Calverley with David working as a weaver. By 1877 they had moved to Saltaire, living at 6 Herbert Street with David working as a mason’s labourer.

In 1891 Mary was a mill hand living with her family at 52 George Street in Saltaire. Mary married George William Exley, a carter, in 1900. They had a son, William, born in 1902. They lived in various houses as follows:-

1905 – 26 Fanny Street Saltaire
1911 – 56 Crag Wood Windhill
1926 – 1 Fanny Street Saltaire
1934 – 11 Stubbing House Shipley
1939 – 2 Dale Street Shipley
1945 – 71 Prospect Street Shipley

Mary died in 1949.

 

Florence Rhodes, who had an older brother, was born c1877 in Saltaire, to John Rhodes & Hannah Pitts. They were married 24 May 1868 in Bradford Cathedral. They lived at 14 Amelia Street in Saltaire with John working as a warehouseman.

In 1891 Florence was working as a spinner, in 1901 she was a silk spreader.
Florence married Harry Eastwood in 1903. They had two children: Clara, born 1904 & Edward, born 1906. In 1911 they were living at 32 Queens Road in Manningham, Bradford.
