BERT THORNTON AT NINETY

Bert Thornton celebrates his ninetieth birthday on the 28th of this month. Bert, like his wife Sheila, is well known and much loved locally - for all the right reasons. Many Sentinel readers will join us in wishing him MANY HAPPY RETURNS.

Bert is featured, talking to David Dimbleby, in 'The North: Full Steam Ahead', the fifth in the series 'How We Built Britain', to be shown on BBC One at 9pm on Sunday, July 1st.

Please note: one very kind visitor to the site informed us that Bert's interview may be screened on 1st July, not the 8th as we previously stated. Please tune in to BBC 1 on the 1st!

BANDSTAND AND HALF MOON
The second musical event of the summer on the SALTAIRE BANDSTAND programme featured Cool Connexion, a jazz quintet from Leeds. Dozens of people of all ages enjoyed the music from their seats or on the lawn – and supported the Half Moon Café staff, who were overworked! On Sunday 10th, jazz guitarist Darren Dutson-Bromley stepped bravely into the breach when the advertised Halifax Chamber Choir had to pull out at short notice. Meanwhile, visitors were able to enjoy an exhibition of paintings, in the café, by local artist David Starley. Music still to come this month will be provided by Aire Valley Singers (17th) and Fairburn Singers with Bonsai Kittens in a double bill (24th), with Hall Royd Brass Band on July 1st. All performances begin at 2.30pm on the site of the old bandstand, above the café, in Roberts Park.

EXCITEMENT AS SKY ROCKET SOARS
Baildon Sky RocketThere was standing room only at the Half Moon Café in May when Saltaire Songster Eddie Lawler launched his new CD, The Baildon Sky Rocket, with a special performance. As well as presenting the songs, Eddie explained the intriguing story behind the title and the show came to a rousing surround-sound climax as the rocket was heard taking off.

WHAT ARE WE PLAYING AT? REVEREND WANTS TO KNOW
Your Community Newspaper received the following email:
My wife and I visited Saltaire on Friday 1st June on a day trip from Ripon, and we were astonished to find that a Tourist Information sign actually led nowhere on a World Heritage Site! It was very hit or miss that we ran across a helpful local map. What are you guys playing at?
Revd. Richard James (Address supplied)
Any Answers? The Sentinel will be pleased to pass them on.

SALTS MILL- THE SILVER YEARS

David Hockney's painting of Jonathan Silver. In 1995, Jonathan contracted pancreatic cancer. In September of that year he had an eight hour operation, which seemed to be successful. However, eighteen months later the cancer had returned... More >>
