Entry: CANAL WALK by Bruce Barnes
CANAL WALK…
a haiku sequence
by Bruce Barnes
Walking by water
is like having a steady
hiking companion.
the cirrus clouds send
invites to the unmasqued ball;
who will we meet there?
trees mislead, they tell
us green but come the autumn
they blush with their lies.
swan white set bobbing
against the coloured leaf floats,
a gift from canal and trees.
a dog's stick, a charmed
stone on the path; what will we
take to see us home?
people on a bridge
meet the other side of still
water and forget.
Saltaire is busy
with history and tea cakes;
Victorians eat.
