The Land Acquisitions of Titus Salt
by Ian Watson
Roberts Era at the Mill
by Dave Shaw

Dear Friends,

Greetings, both to our regulars, and to those newcomers receiving their first round-robin email about our Club.

Our next meeting features two talks by Club members on issues that have been the subjects of recent research findings. (This is a change to our previously announced programme for the evening).

Before Sir Titus could build Saltaire, he had to make the necessary land purchases – not just within the village, but in parts of the surrounding area. Club member Ian Watson has investigated these purchases, and will give a talk entitled “The Land Acquisitions of Titus Salt”.

In the last few months we have been contacted by descendants of Sir James Roberts, who ran the Mill for more than two decades in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The contacts are giving us a more informed understanding of what was a critical time in Saltaire’s history. I’ll be talking about “Roberts’ Era at the Mill” - what we have learnt so far, and what new lines of study could be undertaken in the coming months.

The meeting will have the usual form, with the two talks separated by a tea break, during which we will all have chance to catch up on the latest history findings, or just chat to friends. We’ll also have the usual goodies for sale – Saltaire history books, CDs etc.

Our meeting will be held 7 – 9 pm, in our new venue: the Dance Exercise Room of Victoria Hall – entry via the main entrance or (avoiding stairs) via the side entrance in Lockwood Street.

We very much look forward to seeing you on the 17th.

Best wishes
Dave
