ROGER CLARKE REPORTS: Saltaire, Centre for the Arts
Magic Number Three started out at 3 Victoria Road, but relocated to No. 2 at Easter. It’s still magic – selling arts, crafts and fine food, the majority of which is organic and locally sourced. The owners believe in minimising their carbon footprint, and offer support to local arts, crafts and food producers. This is fast becoming a “must visit” for both visitors and locals who wish to watch village life pass by over a cup of coffee, a sandwich, or one of Magic Number Three’s vegetarian hot food dishes.

Meanwhile, No. 3 Victoria Road has become home to the Victoria Gallery, run by artist David Johnson who specialises in portraiture, nude studies and abstracts. David’s background is in Fine Art and in teaching, most recently in a local Upper School. He also displays the work of other established artists such as Rob McAdam, Julia Odell and Claire Cossey. There are pieces ideal for hanging in larger spaces and smaller paintings, laminated glass tiles and striking Raku fired ceramic “totems” which were used in the ballet “Ghosts and Angels”.
David's telephone number is 01274 589009.
Further up Victoria Road at No.16, the old Needlework Shop is now The House of Rose and
Brown, taking its name from Caroline Brown and her Mum, Rose. Caroline’s aim is to bring fresh art to new audiences and promote local artists, both emerging and established - in all forms of creative expression. This is the place for your unusual and unique gifts for loved ones. Caroline’s shop is an Aladdin’s Cave of treasure, selling vintage clothes, furniture, jewellery, and creative artwork of all kinds, including paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics, and prints and I guarantee that you’ll see something which appeals and catches your eye, whether you buy or not.
