TITUS AND THE LAW
DRAMATIC DISPUTE COMES TO LIGHT
HISTORIANS TO INVESTIGATE TENNESSEE CONNECTION
DAVE SHAW Reports:
At the next meeting of the Saltaire History Club, in the Shipley College Resource Centre, Exhibition Building, Exhibition Road, on Thursday, February 25th, Mr.Philip Barlo(w), of Barlo & Shaw, will be introducing a rare, and interesting, late 19th century American publication produced by Salts Mill and reminding us of the efforts made by the company to sell its products on the USA market.
THEME
Continuing the American theme, I will be describing in detail a Tennessee venture of the 1870s which involved both the Salt and the Crossley families. This venture was to feature in a dramatic bankruptcy hearing in Sheffield, which led, it seems, to Sir Titus altering his will – the subject of the bankruptcy hearing had originally been nominated as a trustee in the will, but Sir Titus subsequently issued a codicil which removed the named individual as a trustee. There is more waiting to be discovered about this particular episode, so if anyone has a special interest in both Saltaire and Tennessee, please step forward! There will be plenty of time given over at the meeting for informal chat over light refreshments, so that anyone wanting to pursue a particular aspect of Saltaire’s history will find something to interest them.
