Roger Clarke's Saltaire people This week: Michael Halliday
Michael Halliday was the licensee of the Boathouse Inn for a year until August 2005, having previously been assistant manager there for three years from 1997. His family has a long association with the Village as both his father and grandmother worked in the Mill. They lived on Mary Street and Caroline Street, where Michael was born. As a teenager Michael, like his father before him, played for Salts Juniors cricket team. He then moved to Salts crown green bowling team, where his mother is still secretary. But the family history with Salts goes back much further than this. Michael's great great grandfather had the dubious distinction of being the first worker to be killed in the Mill when he fell into a dye pot. Unfortunately, Michael does not know the name of this relative, nor the date of his death, the story having been preserved in the family by word of mouth.
