LADY SALT AT SALTAIRE

On Thursday week the annual social gathering of the inmates of the almshouses at Saltaire took place in the Congregational Sunday School, when an excellent tea was partaken by the guests, of whom about forty were present. Those of the inmates numbering about seven, who were prevented by infirmities from being present were treated in their own homes. An added interest occured to the occasion from the presence among the guests of Lady Salt, this being the first occasion wherein her Ladyship has been able to attend since the death of her husband, Sir Titus Salt. The meeting was equally enjoyable to the recipients and donors of the bounty. The former were grateful and pleased at the recognition given of continued interest in them, and the latter with whom were Miss Ada Salt, Mrs.Edward Salt, and Mrs.Titus Salt, derived pleasure from the simple beneficient act itself, which Sir Titus had before made provision for. A short meeting was held after tea when brief addresses were given by the Rev.P.T.Forsyth, of Shipley, the Rev.R.Thompson, of Lightcliffe, and Mr.Smith, the colporteur of Saltaire.

Notes for Sentinel readers:
Sir Titus Salt died on December 29th 1876.
The Mrs.Titus Salt referred to was the wife of Titus Salt Jnr.
Will one of our educated readers please tell us what a colporteur was. [We assume it had nothing to do with carrying coal- or writing songs. –Ed.]
