The funeral of Emily Dickinson, 1894

The new publication, Art, Conservation and Heritage Trail at Nab Wood Cemetery, brings to life a piece of Saltaire history, writes Clive Woods.   Plot L, number 461 contains a very simple grave, perhaps one of the simplest in the cemetery. Here lie the remains of the first person to be buried in Nab Wood Cemetery, on Christmas Eve 1894. Emily Dickinson of 3 Whitlam Street, who was born in Saltaire and a silk spinner at the Mill, died aged only 17 years. She was a school teacher at the Congregational Church and the cortege set off for the cemetery in fog, which lifted, giving a fine day. The burial was conducted by Rev. J. A. Hamilton.
