Sigourney Weaver, spiders and flies
I thought resuscitating a wasp on the brink of death was a very good deed (and ‘resuscitating’ is a very good word – I really like it ) – but I got told off by my dad for getting up at night and unlocking the back door, and I got told off for writing, God damn it, by my mum. My mum said... More >

United Reformed Church Concert
Correction in The Sentinel:
There is an article on the front page of this month’s Sentinel (column 4) promoting a concert at the URC on “March 26th”. Correct info as follows: The Gisburn Singers will perform a concert at Saltaire United Reformed Church on Sunday,  May 26th at 3pm, featuring  500 years of English Music, from Madrigals to Modern, including  works by Tallis, Elgar, Britten and the Beatles. Entry is free but there will be a retiring collection in support of the restoration fund. The church café will be open before and after the concert serving teas, coffee and cake.
The Spirit of Bradford
You can't stop a Yorkshire lad from supporting his football team and being optimistic! Eddie Lawler's song for the Bradford/Swansea match is available for download. And in the spirit of good sportsmanship, there's a verse in Welsh as well. Good job that the Swansea team formed a guard of honour for their beaten opponents! More>
Signal crayfish in the River Aire
Peter Bottomley writes: All over Great Britain, living in most of our rivers is the alien signal crayfish; this crustacean can grow up to 100cm and live for up to 20 years. It has been found in traps at Silsden and it is on its way down stream to Saltaire, so the fish pass in the proposed water turbine will allow the problem more easily to flow further down the river. The plague it carries is rapidly fatal to the British crayfish (about 3 weeks), a white oval patch on its claw hinge gives it the name 'signal' because it resembles the train signalman's flag and it is bluish brown in overall colour. The Jonathan Silver / David Hockney connection
There are many people involved in Saltaire's success. The first, of course, was Sir Titus Salt. But the story doesn't end there. The Silver family is very much a part of Saltaire. Jonathan Silver rescued Salts Mill from dereliction, but sadly died in 1997. His spirit in Salts Mill is very much alive. Read David Hockney's tribute to Jonathan, his friend, who brought Hockney's art to grace Salts Mill. More >

Saltaire in the 1940s - Who, what, where, when?
Matthew Godfrey writes:
I have an old group photograph taken in I'd say the 1940's in what maybe Saltaire Victoria Hall and wonder if the Saltaire History Club would be interested in publishing it on the site to ask if anyone recognises the event, themselves and/or any of their relatives. Although I can recognise 4 members of my family, the photo is still a bit of a mystery and was found in my dear Great Aunty's house in 2011 after she sadly passed away. [See photo] If it is something of interest would love to hear from you. More >
