Saltaire Village Society - E-Bulletin April 2008

To keep you in touch with what the Society is involved in (amongst other things):

“Saltaire Bypass” proposals – SVS is involved in lobbying and monitoring developments. The Regional Transport Board recently decided NOT to endorse a scheme to improve roads in Shipley and Saltaire. Whilst the scheme on question did not include the bypass proposals, the decision not to endorse first phase of changes at Canal Road will impact upon the bypass proposals that have caused concern in the vilage.

Traffic in Saltaire – campaigning for measures to discourage rat-running. Surveys are being undertaken, a petition of nearly 600 signatures has already been submitted, will be formally handed to a full Council meeting in July

“Sustainable Saltaire” – gathering relevant information for residents regarding reduction of fuel bills and carbon emissions in our ageing but listed properties

Trees in Victoria Road – SVS are insisting that the Council observes its own planning procedures, getting involved in future plans for tree replacement and the restoration of Victoria Road as a whole

Caroline Street Square (“Silver Square”) - plans are imminent for visual improvement of this open area in the village, as a result of our lobbying.

Roberts Park – awaiting the news of the restoration bid, due after the local elections. Meanwhile a new series of “Saltaire Bandstand” has been lined up for summer Sundays, beginning on 25 May.

The Boathouse – SVS are seeking urgent information from the owners regarding plans for its future. Your attention is also drawn to a planning application for another café-bar in Victoria Road – details are online at If you have any comments regarding this application, the planners need to hear from you pretty quick

Saltaire Festival arrives for the sixth time in September and needs volunteers for all sorts of activities – if interested in helping out please phone the hotline 585877. Tickets for the Festival Ball are currently on sale.

The Village Society AGM will take place this year in Salts Sports Club (a short summery walk on the Canal path) on Monday 2nd June from 7.30 to 9pm. Nominations welcome for the posts of President, secretary and treasurer, or come along and offer to join the committee.

Come and meet your fellow-residents and Saltaire “curators”!
