Jackson) are hitmen with a penchant for philosophical discussions. Their storyline is interwoven with those of their boss, gangster Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) ; his actress wife, Mia (Uma Thurman) ; struggling boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) ; master fixer Winston Wolfe (Harvey Keitel) and a nervous pair of armed robbers, “Pumpkin” (Tim Roth) and “Honey Bunny” (Amanda Plummer). Unmissable!

Victoria Hall's first film of a fantastic Autumn line-up for you to feast your eyes on. The Theory of Everything, directed by James Marsh and starring Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne, was a triumph for all involved.

It tells the story of the most brilliant and celebrated physicist of our time, Stephen Hawking, and Jane Wilde, the arts student he fell in love with whilst studying at Cambridge in the 1960s. Little was expected from Stephen Hawking, a bright but shiftless student of cosmology, given just two years to live following the diagnosis of a fatal illness at 21 years of age. He became galvanized, however, by the love of fellow Cambridge student Jane Wilde, and he went on to be called the successor to Einstein, as well as a husband and father to their three children. Over the course of their marriage, as Stephen’s body collapsed and his academic renown soared, fault lines were exposed that tested the lineaments of their relationship and dramatically altered the course of both of their lives.

Saltaire Myths and Saltaire Stories

It's great when people tell stories to bring Saltaire to life for visitors and school children. Those interested in facts, please take note: unless stories are sourced, don't assume they're part of Saltaire's history.

Have you heard of any of these? Go to page for full list >

Rules of the Village sold at the Visitor Information Centre are a "lighthearted souvenir"
These rules are sold as a "lighthearted souvenir" say Visitor Information Centre. The Rules of the Mill and of the Village were created, it is thought, by the late Clive Woods, a local man, who died in 2007. More>

The genuine and sourced rules of Saltaire

So far, it's been established there are two sets of Rules of Saltaire Village from Sir Titus Salt's time that are genuine.
Local historian, Colin Coates, confirms there are also genuine rules for Sir Titus Salt Hospital, written in 1910 and revised in 1922.

Victoria Road Scheme update - May 2015

Work will commence week of 18th May on repairing and renewing all the pavements. The old York stone pavements below the railway will be repaired as necessary. The work above the railway will involve excavating old concrete pavement flags and constructing new foundations. Locally sourced, new York stone will be laid and mortared in. Wherever possible the old kerb stones will be retained. Details such as fan ends and cellar light surrounds may require the cutting of flags to size on site.
Work on the new pavements is to start on the west side of the Road above Albert Terrace and progressing up the Road to Saltaire Road and then to move over to the east side and working down. However the programme may be subject to variations and these will be notified as appropriate.
Access to the pavement, highway and parking bays will be managed to minimise disruption and the area will be barriered off for safety. Pedestrians may need to use pavements on the other side of the Road from time to time. Access to front doors will be maintained at all times.

Bradford Council's proposed hydro-scheme in Roberts Park

What's happening? New developments. The Heritage Lottery Fund does not approve

Updates and related info:
1. Friends of Roberts Park objection to the scheme.

2. Local Planning Authority received 53 objections, including one from the Member of Parliament, and 20 supporting comments, including two from Shipley Ward councillors.

3. Letter from Heritage Lottery Fund to Bradford Council dated 20 April, 2015, disapproving of the scheme.

Extract: In March 2008 the Heritage Lottery Fund and BIG Lottery Fund invested a grant of £3,206,000 in Roberts Park (our reference PF-06-00048/2) for a programme of works to restore this important public park.
The contract between City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund was signed on 5 June 2008 and the conditions last for 25 years. One of the conditions of grant is that land cannot be 'sold, let or parted with' without HLF agreement in writing.

4. Meeting to discuss the planning application for the hydro-electric scheme proposed for Roberts Park, Saltaire, Wednesday 29 April 2015 at Shipley Town Hall Shipley at 10.00am.

Updated: 23 April 2015

Saltaire weir
The Friends of Roberts Park object to the proposed hydro-electric scheme in Roberts Park

Summary:

5.1.1 The Friends of Roberts Park believe that the building of the proposed hydro fails to offer benefits sufficient to justify the harm to Roberts Park and the World Heritage Site of which it is part.

5.1.2 The application is therefore inconsistent with the National Planning Policy Framework and should be rejected.

5.1.3 As we have shown, other planning rules and guidance will also be breached, giving further reasons for rejection.

5.2.1 However, if the planning panel decide to approve the scheme, we ask that they place a condition that a higher standard of noise mitigation be incorporated at the outset. We have been advised that water-cooling of the fans would reduce noise further – and given the sensitive location of the turbine in a popular, heritage park, this does not seem an unreasonable requirement.

Victoria Road Scheme update - April 2015

Work will commence in the week of 20th April replacing all the old lamp posts with the new ones and will take several weeks. The work will involve disconnecting the old columns, taking them away and reconnecting the new ones. To maintain light on the Road at all times there may be an overlap when some old poles remain in place awaiting the connection of new poles.

Access to the footpath, highway and parking bays will be managed to minimise disruption and the area coned off for safety each day. Access to front doors will be maintained at all times. To see a picture of the new lighting column please see the Victoria Road Saltaire Scheme Drawing.

Rings...The Changes

Kath Libbert Jewellery, Salts Mill

Subtly surprising, delicately different, demanding of a closer look and definitely not the norm! The focus for this year’s Annual Alternative Wedding Show taking place in Salts Mill is on Four Fabulous Jewellers whose work defies tradition: crisp corrugation in gold inspired by work in paper, furls of silver birch bark translate into the fluid curves of sculptural rings, hand cut lovingly sourced antique gems sparkle against rich matt 22ct gold, and for those who want to really buck tradition the Parody rings provide a welcome poke at the value placed on big rocks! A FILM NIGHT FOR
WORLD WATER DAY

Sunday 22nd March, from 7pm
Kirkgate Centre, Shipley

We do hope you can join for a drink, a chat, and a movie. We'll be showing two films, and hosting a bit of an informal discussion about them to celebrate World Water Day.
How does the water in our local area relate to the global scene?
The main feature is Watermark (2014), an award-winning documentary film full of stunningly beautiful images. It brings together diverse stories from around the globe about the human relationship with water: from surfing USA to bathing in the Ganges, Watermark immerses viewers in a world defined by a magnificent force of nature that we all too often take for granted.

To open the evening, we will also be screening a short local film, Wading to Shipley (2013), which traces a journey along the hidden reaches of Bradford Beck as it flows towards Shipley, revealing a surprising landscape.

"I grew up in Australia, and have been dabbling with pencils and paints my entire life, influenced greatly by my father who was a very creative and talented man. My paintings are from photographs and mostly portrayed realistically, though sometimes artistic liberty is taken to change colours or exaggerate features that I feel enhance the subject. I try to keep my subject matter simple and I’m inspired by colour, composition, mood and nature."

We are now looking for houses to participate in the Saltaire Arts Trail, which will be held during 23-25 May, the second bank holiday weekend that month.  This is a unique opportunity to have your rooms adorned with contemporary artwork and handcrafted pieces.

Over the years Arts Trail has been a huge success and with your help we can make it even better. So, if you are interested in taking part by opening your house or would like more details, including the opportunity to talk to someone whose previously opened their house, please email us at team@saltaireinspired.org.uk , ideally before Monday 24 January.

Denys Salt
Remembering Denys Salt

22 December 2014. Today, we heard that Denys Salt, the great grandson of Sir Titus Salt, had died. His health had been frail recently and he had been readmitted to hospital on Saturday. A friend stayed with him until midnight when he fell asleep. He died in the early hours of 21st December.

Dave Shaw, a long-time friend of Denys writes: "Denys who was 96, was a lovely, wonderful man, as all who met him here in Saltaire will testify. He was, effectively, the Salt family historian and had encouraged the learning of Saltaire history for more than 50 years. His loss will be keenly felt by many.
A very sad start to Christmas week, but a life to be greatly celebrated, not least for the example Denys set us all."
