Hainsworth, Hannah
1876-????

Hannah Hainsworth was born 1876 in Saltaire, the youngest of eight children to William Hainsworth & Hannah Craven. They were married 8 April 1861.

The year Hannah was born her father William died. In 1881 & 1891 the family lived at 3 Caroline Street in Saltaire with Hannah working as a spinner.

In 1911 Hannah married a Mr Rhodes (first name unknown), but at the census she was living with her mother and without her husband at 26 Park Street in Shipley.

 

Hainsworth, Mary
1874 -????

Mary Hainsworth was born 1874 in Saltaire, the second of three children to Alfred Hainsworth & Saran Ann Jowett. They were married 27 October 1860.

In 1861 they lived in Wilsden with Alfred working as a warp dresser. In 1871 & 1881 they were living at 37 Ada Street in Saltaire. In 1891 & 1901 they were at 9 Jane Street in Saltaire with Mary working as a weaver.

In 1911 Mary was still a weaver and she was living alone at 27 Titus Street in Saltaire.

 

Hall, Alice
1880 – 1950

Alice Hall was born 1880 in Saltaire, the fifth of eight children to Samuel Hall & Jane Bates. They married 30 July 1872 at Bradford Cathedral. In 1881 they were living at 23 Princess Street in Shipley with Samuel was working as a blacksmith’s striker.

By 1891 they had moved to 28 Shirley Street in Saltaire with Alice working as a spinner. In 1901 they were at 48 Rhodes Street in Saltaire with Alice working as a warp dresser.

Alice married Fred Stirk 21 September 1901 at St Paul’s Shipley. They were both living at 12 Baker Street in Saltaire. They had three daughters; Ivy born 1902, Mary born 1904 & Elizabeth born 1906. In 1911 the family were living in Castleford with Fred working as a stud groom.

Alice died in 1950 in Pontefract. Alice was the sister of Elizabeth Annie Hall.

 

Hall, Elizabeth Annie
1878 -????

Elizabeth Annie Hall was born 1878 in Saltaire, the fourth of eight children to Samuel Hall & Jane Bates. They married 30 July 1872 at Bradford Cathedral.

In 1881 they were living at 23 Princess Street in Shipley with Samuel was working as a blacksmith’s striker. By 1891 they had moved to 28 Shirley Street in Saltaire with Annie working as a spinner. In 1901 they were at 48 Rhodes Street in Saltaire with Annie working as a twister.

Annie married Wilson Joseph Howe, a farm labourer, 3 April 1915 at St Paul’s Shipley. They lived at 3 Thackley Road in Shipley.

Wilson served in World War One and he survived. Annie was the sister of Alice Hall.

 

Hanson, Alice
1870 -????

Alice Hanson was born 1870 in Saltaire, the fourth of seven children, to Joseph Hanson & Annie Hall. They were married 1856 at Sunderland in County Durham.

In 1881 & 1891 they were living at 23 Gordon Terrace (renumbered 95 Bingley Road) in Saltaire with Joseph working as a joiner. In 1891 Alice was working as a silk picker.

[It is unclear what happened to Sarah after 1891.]

 

Hanson, Annie
c1869 – 1899

Annie Hanson born Saltaire c1869 was the youngest of six children to Joseph & Mary Hanson. From before 1871 to after 1891 the family lived at 2 Myrtle Place in Saltaire. Joseph was a mechanic and in 1891 Annie was working in the mill as a silk picker.

Sadly Annie died in September 1899 aged just 30. She was buried 12 September 899 at St Paul’s, Shipley.

 

Harrison, Clara
1876 -????

Clara Harrison was born 1876 in Saltaire, the youngest of ten children to Jabez Harrison & Elizabeth Bolton. They were married in 1858.

In 1861 & 1871 they were living at 39 Whitlam Street in Saltaire with Jabez working as a warp dresser. In 1881 they were at 1 Shirley Street in Saltaire. By 1891 they had moved to 18 George Street in Saltaire with Clara working as a warp picker. In 1901 they were living in Bradford with Clara working as a draper’s assistant.

Clara was the sister of Sarah Harrison. [It is unclear what happened to Clara after 1901.]

 

Harrison, Martha Alice
1877 -????

Martha Alice Harrison born 1877 in Saltaire, the second youngest of seven children to John & Mary Ann Harrison. In 1861 they lived in Burnley with John working as a weaver.

From 1881 they lived at 12 George Street in Saltaire. In 1891 Martha was a silk spreader and in 1901 she was a weaver.

[It is unclear what happened to Martha after 1901.]

 

Harrison, Sarah
1868 -????

Sarah Harrison was born 1868 in Saltaire, the sixth of ten children to Jabez Harrison & Elizabeth Bolton. They were married in 1858.

In 1861 & 1871 they were living at 39 Whitlam Street in Saltaire with Jabez working as a warp dresser. In 1881 they were at 1 Shirley Street in Saltaire with Sarah working as a spinner. By 1891 they had moved to 18 George Street in Saltaire with Sarah working as a reeler.

Sarah was the sister of Clara Harrison.

[It is unclear what happened to Sarah after 1891.]

 

Hartley, Eliza
1869 -????

Eliza Hartley was born 1869 in Saltaire, the seventh of nine children to Edward Hartley & Mary Hesling. They were married 15 May 1851 at Bradford Cathedral.

In 1861 they were living at 16 Ada Street in Saltaire with Edward working as a wool sorter. By 1871 they had moved to 1 Jane Street in Saltaire. From 1881 they lived at 14 Gordon Terrace (renumbered 77 Bingley Road) in Saltaire. In 1891 Eliza was a twister and in 1901 she was a dressmaker.

Eliza was the sister of Sarah Ellen Hartley & Rhoda Hartley.

[Eliza Hartley is a common name, difficult to trace after 1901.]

 

Hartley, Rhoda
1875 – 1962

Rhoda Hartley was born 1875 in Saltaire, the youngest of nine children to Edward Hartley & Mary Hesling. They were married 15 May 1851 at Bradford Cathedral. In 1861 they were living at 16 Ada Street in Saltaire with Edward working as a wool sorter.

By 1871 they had moved to 1 Jane Street in Saltaire. From 1881 they lived at 14 Gordon Terrace (renumbered 77 Bingley Road) in Saltaire. In 1891 Rhoda was a spinner and in 1901 she was a weaver.

Rhoda married William Halliwell 15 Jun 1902 at St. James Bolton. By 1911 they were living at 1 Ferrand Road in Shipley; William was the chief clerk in an education office. They had two sons; Lawrence (9 Jun 1904 – 1984) and Eric (8 Aug 1910 – 1984).

Rhoda died in 1962 aged 87. Rhoda was the sister of Sarah Ellen Hartley & Eliza Hartley.

 

Hartley, Sarah Ellen
1873 – 1891

Sarah Ellen Hartley was born 1873 in Saltaire, the eighth of nine children to Edward Hartley & Mary Hesling. They were married 15 May 1851 at Bradford Cathedral.

In 1861 they were living at 16 Ada Street in Saltaire with Edward working as a wool sorter. By 1871 they had moved to 1 Jane Street in Saltaire. From 1881 they lived at 14 Gordon Terrace (renumbered 77 Bingley Road) in Saltaire. In 1891 Sarah was working as winder.

Sadly Sarah died in 1891 aged just 18. She was buried 25 July 1891 at St Pauls Shipley. Sarah was the sister of Eliza Hartley & Rhoda Hartley.

 

Hartop, Hannah
c1878 – 1948

Hannah Hartop was born c1878 in Saltaire, the middle child of three to Thomas & Elizabeth Hartop. In 1881 & 1891 they were living at 19 Edward Street in Saltaire; Thomas was a butcher. In 1891 Hannah was working as a spinner. In 1901 Hannah was living with her married sister Sarah at 24 Helen Street in Saltaire, she was working as a wool comber.

Hannah married Sylvester Law 27 July 1901 at St Pauls Shipley. By 1911 they were living without children at 28 Whitlam Street in Saltaire. They were both wool combers.

Hannah died in 1948, aged 70, in the Worth Valley area.
Hannah was the sister of Sarah Hartop.

 

Hartop, Sarah
C1875 -????

Sarah Hartop was born c1875 in Saltaire, the eldest of three children to Thomas & Elizabeth Hartop. In 1881 & 1891 they were living at 19 Edward Street in Saltaire; Thomas was a butcher. In 1891 Sarah was working as a weaver.

Sarah married Charles Bailey 21 December 1895 at St. Pauls Shipley. By 1901 they were living at 24 Helen Street in Saltaire. Charles was a dry stone waller and Sarah was a wool comber. By 1911 they were both wool combers living at 28 Whitlam Street in Saltaire. They had three children; Annie born c1898, Violetta born c1899 and Susannah born c1903. 

Sarah was the sister of Hannah Hartop.

 

Hill, Jane
c1877 -????

Jane Hill was born c1877 in Saltaire to parents unknown. In 1881 she was living with her grandmother, Jane Hill, at 15 Constance Street in Saltaire. By 1891 she was working as a spinner and living with her Aunt, Ann Brown, at 16 Herbert Street in Saltaire.

In 1901 she was in the North Bierley Union Workhouse.

[Jane Hill is a common name – difficult to trace after 1901.]

 

Hinton, Laura
1872 -????

Laura Hinton was born 1872 in Saltaire, the sixth of nine children to Charles Hinton & Agnes Keziah May Morgan. They were married in 1857 in Hampshire.

In 1861 they were living in Winchester with Charles working as a wool sorter. By 1871 they were living at 6 Whitlam Street in Saltaire, moving to 31 Albert Road (renumbered 61) before 1881. In 1891 Laura was working as a spinner and living with her family at 8 Herbert Road in Saltaire.

Laura married William Henry Reynolds in 1896. In 1901 they were living in Northampton with William working as a photographer. 

Laura was the sister of Rosetta Hinton.

 

Hinton, Rosetta
1874 – 1958

Rosetta Hinton was born 1874 in Saltaire, the seventh of nine children to Charles Hinton & Agnes Keziah May Morgan. They were married in 1857 in Hampshire.

In 1861 they were living in Winchester with Charles working as a wool sorter. By 1871 they were living at 6 Whitlam Street in Saltaire, moving to 31 Albert Road (renumbered now as 61) before 1881. In 1891 Rosetta was working as a reeler and living with her family at 8 Herbert Road in Saltaire.

Rosetta never married and she died in 1958 in Exeter. Rosetta was the sister of Laura Hinton.

 

Hird, Annie
1874 -????

Annie Hird was born 1874 in Saltaire. She was the eldest of three children to Jonas Hird & Sarah Hainsworth. They were married 19 November 1872 in Bradford Cathedral.

In 1881 & 1891 the family were living at 6 William Henry Street in Saltaire with Jonas working as a weaving overlooker and in 1891 Sarah was working as a weaver.

Annie married Ernest Richard Robinson in 1900. In 1901 & 1911 they were living in Bradford with Ernest working as a woollen merchant’s assistant. They had a son, Norman, born in 1904.

 

Hodgson, Amelia
c1878 – 1954

Amelia Hodgson was the youngest of six children born to William & Mary Hodgson. Mary may have died around 1878/79 as William married his second wife, Emily Ann Turton, 23 August 1879 at Bradford Cathedral. William died in 1916.

Amelia was born c1878 in Saltaire. In 1881 & 1891 the family were living at Stable Cottages, Victoria Road in Saltaire with William working as a farrier.
In 1891 Amelia, aged just 13, was working in the mill.

Amelia, aged 18, married William Crossley 31 October 1896 at Bradford Cathedral. William was twenty years her senior. They had a son, James William born c1898.

In 1901 the family was living in North Bierley, William was wool comber. By 1911 they had moved to 26 Broadbent Street, in Bradford. Amelia was working as a spinner.

William died in 1940 and Amelia died in 1954.

 

Holdsworth, Lydia
1865 – 16 September 1926

Lydia was born 1865 in Saltaire, the youngest of six children to Michael Holdsworth & Martha Murgatroyd. They were married 1 June 1851 at Bradford Cathedral. In 1861 they were living at 4 Whitlam Street in Saltaire with Michael working as a weft overlooker. From 1871 they lived at 4 Gordon Terrace (renumbered 57 Bingley Road) in Saltaire. In 1891 Michael was a weft room manager and Lydia was a spinner.

Lydia married William Charles Payne 13 May 1896 at St Pauls Shipley. They lived at 10 Albert Street in Bingley with William working as a wool warehouseman.

Lydia died 16 September 1926 at St John’s Hospital in Keighley.

 

Holdsworth, Sarah Louisa
c1873 – 1928

Sarah Louisa Holdsworth was born in Saltaire c1873 was the youngest of five children to Edwin Holdsworth & Harriet Driver. They were married in 1861.

The family lived at 41 Titus Street in Saltaire from before 1881 to after 1901. Edwin was a weaving overlooker. In 1891 Sarah was a piece burler, in 1901 she was an assistant in a drapers shop. By 1911 Sarah was a sick nurse attendant for the Grosvenor family at 2 Lancaster Park Road in Harrogate.

Sarah died a spinster in 1928 aged 55.

 

Horsfall, Bertha
1870 -????

Bertha Horsfall was, the fifth of seven children, born to Thomas Horsfall and Sarah Flaxington. Thomas married Sarah at All Saints Otley 1 January 1859.
Bertha was born Saltaire 1870. From before 1871 to after 1901 the family lived at 15 Albert Road (renumbered 29) in Saltaire.

In 1881, although aged just ten, Bertha was working part time in the mill as she was being educated. In 1899 Bertha married Frank Hopkinson aged 27. Frank was from Bradford, and he was a wool buyer.

In 1901 the married couple were living with Bertha’s widowed mother at 15 Albert Road in Saltaire.  Bertha was still working in the mill. Bertha sailed alone from Liverpool 17 June 1911 aboard the S.S. Baltic leaving her husband behind at home in Sheffield. She arrived in New York on 26 Jun 1911.

 

Hustler, Alice
c1869 – 1950

Alice Hustler was born in Saltaire c1869, the youngest of five children to Isaac & Ann Hustler. From before 1871 to after 1891 the family lived at 15 William Henry Street in Saltaire. Isaac was a mill worker; Alice was a reeler.

By 1901 Alice was living at 11 Victoria Road in Saltaire with two of her sisters. They were all confectioners & bakers.

Alice married Christopher Holgate in 1902. They had a daughter, Edith, born in 1904. They ran the business together under the name “Holgate and Hustler, plain and fancy confectioners” at 11 Victoria Road.

Alice died in 1950. Clara was the sister of Hannah Hustler and Clara Hustler.

 

Hustler, Clara
c1866 – 4 January 1939

Clara Hustler was born in Saltaire c1866, the fourth of five children to Isaac & Ann Hustler. From before 1871 to after 1891 the family lived at 15 William Henry Street in Saltaire. Isaac was a mill worker; Clara was a worsted weaver.

By 1901 Clara was living at 11 Victoria Road in Saltaire with two of her sisters. They were all confectioners & bakers.

Clara married Ben Emmott in 1903. By 1911 the married couple were living, with no children, at 24 Scarborough Road in Shipley. Ben worked as a stuff warehouseman.

Clara died 4 January 1939 aged 73. Her home was 24 Scarborough Road in Shipley. Clara was the sister of Hannah Hustler and Alice Hustler.

 

Hustler, Hannah
c1861 – 24 December 1942

Hannah Hustler was born in Saltaire c1861, the third of five children to Isaac & Ann Hustler. From before 1871 to after 1891 the family lived at 15 William Henry Street in Saltaire. Isaac was a mill worker; Hannah was a worsted weaver then a silk picker.

By 1901 Hannah was living at 11 Victoria Road in Saltaire with her two younger sisters. They were all confectioners & bakers. In 1911 Hannah was still a confectioner at 11 Victoria Road, but now living her sister, Alice, and her husband Christopher Holgate.

Hannah died a spinster 24 December 1942 aged 81. Her home was 15 Scarborough Road in Shipley. Hannah was the sister of Clara Hustler and Alice Hustler.
